About the Artist

Catherine Van Berg - Biography

Paintings in Oil

"For the Quiet Spirit"

Catherine lives in Taos, NM after bouncing between Albuquerque and Denver for many years. She grew up as an Army Brat living all over the world, but spent her formative years in the quiet and earthiness of the New Mexico desert. Living in the creative town of Taos was always the goal after retirement, and she and her husband are finally there. Catherine is taking advantage of the beautiful skies, a serene tree-lined street, and a wonderful studio to paint daily.

Catherine found her way into the professional arts after investing twenty-five years in a Computer Science career, then another ten years in Graphic Design. Like so many latent artists, Design led to the desire to create directly and tactilely, without a computer. Her path finally brought her to oil painting, where she will happily remain.

Catherine is inspired by the southwest “high desert.”  She paints in plein air weekly, and in her studio the rest of the time.  When she’s traveling the roads and mountains of New Mexico (and beyond), she’s aware of her surroundings: the animals she sees, the landscape they live in, and the architecture of the places she visits.

It gives her great joy to capture the feeling she gets when she sees the wild horses roaming the roads of northern New Mexico.  Catherine was also a dressage rider and horse owner for many years.  She understands the strength, agility, and conformation of the horse, plus the amazing feeling of having a 1500 pound animal under the control of her lightest touch.  The horses still leave her breathless witnessing their rambunctious play when they’re feeling frisky.

The other animals Catherine likes to portray, she sees in her daily life in Taos and beyond.  The coyotes, deer, cows, sheep, crows, and geese inform her everyday life, and make her wanderings around Taos more interesting, and herself part of the larger ecosystem.  These lives ground her, and make her life and artistic expression a soft and peaceful one.
